Tinnitus Treatment Options in Laredo, TX

Treat Tinnitus the Correct Way

What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is defined as the perception of noise within the ears that is not caused by the outside environment. Though the noise in question is usually described as a “ringing,” patients can also experience buzzing, clicking, hissing, or roaring noises. These noises can vary in pitch, volume, and duration. Some people might experience a faint or brief episode of tinnitus; others may experience tinnitus so severe that it impedes their ability to process actual sound.

There are two types of tinnitus: subjective and objective. Subjective tinnitus occurs when the offending noise can only be heard by the patient. Objective tinnitus occurs when a doctor can also hear the noise when he or she examines the patient. Objective tinnitus is much rarer than subjective.

Tinnitus is a very common medical condition, and as many as 1 in 5 people may experience it in their lifetime. Dr. Erik Sloman-Moll, MD PA is proud to serve and treat the area of Laredo, TX. Call our office today to schedule an appointment with our physicians.

Testing Conducted for Tinnitus

Do you have tinnitus and want a little relief? Tinnitus is unique in the sense it affects everyone differently, making it difficult to diagnose. Contacting an ear, nose, and throat specialist is the only solution when getting some relief. Dr. Erik Sloman-Moll, MD PA, will run various tests to diagnose your tinnitus and determine the best treatment plan. Here are a few tests that will be conducted to help find the proper treatment for you.

  • Pitch Matching Test: In this test, you will have to match the pitch of your tinnitus by comparing it to another sound. The specialist will then be able to determine the exact frequency you are hearing.
  • Movement Test: Your symptoms could change with some simple movements. Your doctor will ask you to move your eyes, arms, legs, and neck or clench your jaw to see if any activity triggers tinnitus.
  • Speech Understanding Test: An inner ear disorder could affect your socializing and daily tasks. This test will measure how well you can hear speech in a noisy and quiet environment.
  • Loudness Matching Test: This exam determines the volume level you are hearing. Patients with tinnitus typically hear a softer sound like a whisper than loud sounds.

While there is no cure for tinnitus, Dr. Erik Sloman-Moll, MD PA, will do everything he can to reduce the pain and annoyance. Don’t suffer from tinnitus anymore! Call us today, or visit our office in Laredo, TX, to schedule an appointment with our ear, nose, and throat specialists.

What tinnitus treatments are available?

  • Treating the cause: Sometimes tinnitus is caused by an underlying health condition. If that’s the case, then steps such as removing earwax, changing the patient’s medication, or treating a condition of the blood vessels may help the patient find relief.
  • Suppressing the noise: While this type of treatment won’t cure the tinnitus, it can make the symptoms less bothersome. White noise machines, hearing aids, masking devices, and tinnitus retraining can all help patients drown out or ignore the tinnitus symptoms, allowing them to focus on the sounds that matter.
  • Taking medications: Certain medications such as tricyclic antidepressants and alprazolam (Niravam, Xanax) can reduce the symptoms of tinnitus. However, it is important for the patient.
